Akamai.
The most widely distributed edge network in the market, and the platform most enterprises measure everyone else against. Here is what Akamai actually is in 2026, what it costs, where it wins, and where we would point you elsewhere.
Akamai in seven bars.
Our advisory read, scored against the 25+ provider field we benchmark. Blue is where Akamai leads; gray is where the trade-offs live.
Scores reflect CDN World’s benchmark position as of July 2026 and move with the market, they are advisory judgment, not a lab measurement.
The enterprise default, for a reason.
Akamai invented the commercial CDN in 1998 and has spent 25+ years turning that head start into the deepest edge footprint and the broadest platform in the market: delivery, security, and, since acquiring Linode, cloud compute.
Where rivals build fewer, larger data centers, Akamai deploys thousands of smaller PoPs deep inside ISP networks, closer to the last mile, which is why it holds up in hard-to-reach geographies where centralized networks thin out.
App & API Protector, Prolexic DDoS mitigation, Bot Manager and Guardicore segmentation make Akamai one of the few CDNs whose security line rivals dedicated vendors, and it is priced accordingly.
The Linode acquisition became Akamai Connected Cloud: core and distributed compute regions on the same backbone as the edge, aimed at workloads that want to escape hyperscaler egress bills.
Trials on request rather than self-serve, no published list prices, annual contracts as the norm. Akamai is bought through people, which is exactly where benchmarked procurement changes the outcome.
Capability by capability.
The current product names behind each workload, several of Akamai’s best-known legacy names (Kona, Dynamic Site Accelerator, Web Application Protector) have folded into the products below.
Route optimization, protocol tuning and edge Speculation Rules for the pages that can’t be cached.
Core platformNon-cacheable API traffic carried over the optimized backbone.
Core platformInstallers, patches and firmware at launch-day scale.
Core platformHLS/DASH at broadcast scale, one platform for live and on-demand.
Core platformAutomatic transform and compression, often bundled into security deals.
Add-onThe flagship WAAP; the Hybrid edition extends the same policies to non-Akamai infrastructure.
Add-onDedicated scrubbing for BGP-routed protection of entire networks.
Add-onStandalone or layered onto App & API Protector.
Add-onZero Trust segmentation that stops lateral movement inside the estate.
Add-onEnterprise Application Access and Secure Internet Access for the workforce side.
Add-onJavaScript executed at the edge with a key-value store beside it.
Add-onLinode-lineage VMs, Kubernetes and storage on the same backbone as the edge.
Add-onAkamai’s DNS, also the requirement for clean apex-domain CDN setups.
Add-onHost content on Akamai with no customer origin at all.
Add-onWhere the network runs deep.
Depth is CDN World’s qualitative read of Akamai’s regional edge density from our benchmarks and Akamai’s disclosures, deliberately not a PoP count. Published country lists never reconcile with headline PoP claims, for any CDN, so we don’t pretend otherwise. Akamai’s own 2026 SEC figure: 4,300+ edge PoPs, 130+ countries, ~700 cities. Mainland China: direct delivery ceased 30 June 2026; customers transition to Tencent Cloud and Wangsu, and an ICP filing is required regardless of vendor.
How Akamai is bought.
No public self-serve trial; proofs of concept are arranged on request, subject to Akamai’s qualification criteria. Via CDN World we scope and arrange them, and activation typically lands within 48 hours of contract.
None. Pricing is negotiated, annual and volume-dependent, which is why benchmarks decide outcomes.
Committed-volume tiers from first-100 TB down to 1 PB+, your tier’s rate applying to all traffic, see the full rate card.
$499 via CDN World, prepaid and deducted from usage at your tier rate, a floor, not a fee.
Standard delivery is volume-billed; some products and add-ons meter requests or transforms.
Above the published bands everything is negotiated individually, exactly the negotiation CDN World runs for a living.
Buying Akamai through CDN World means the identical Akamai network, portal, API and 24/7 support, at aggregated-volume tier rates from $0.050 down to $0.009 per GB, a $499 monthly minimum, activation in about 48 hours, and our advisory and escalation layer included. If Akamai isn’t your best fit, we tell you before you sign anything.

Where it wins. Where it doesn’t.
The honest summary we give clients before any Akamai conversation, from 20+ years on both sides of the table and 200+ assessments a year.
Your audience is genuinely global, including hard geographies; you need enterprise-grade WAF, bot and DDoS from the same edge; you deliver large media or software volumes; or procurement demands the reference vendor. On these workloads it is consistently excellent.
You want self-serve simplicity, monthly rolling terms, or developer-first ergonomics; your traffic is modest and regional; or your budget is set by the per-GB line alone. Akamai’s list pricing and configuration surface are real costs, not rumors.
List rates are a starting position, never the price. Benchmarked buyers routinely land materially below first proposals, and through CDN World’s aggregated tiers, Akamai runs from $0.050 down to $0.009 per GB with a $499 monthly minimum, on Akamai’s own portal and support.

Asked about Akamai,
answered straight.
Is Akamai the largest CDN?
By edge distribution, yes: 4,300+ points of presence across 130+ countries and roughly 700 cities per Akamai’s own 2026 SEC filings, no one else deploys that widely. Other networks are larger by other measures, like per-location capacity, which is why “largest” claims need a definition attached.
How much does Akamai cost?
Akamai publishes no list prices, and trials are arranged on request against qualification criteria rather than self-serve; pricing is negotiated, annual, and volume-dependent. Through CDN World’s aggregated tiers it runs from $0.050 down to $0.009 per GB with a $499 monthly minimum, and high-volume commitments are negotiated individually, that negotiation is literally our job.
Is buying via CDN World the same service as buying direct?
Same network, same Akamai portal and API, same 24/7 Akamai support, plus our layer on top. The difference is the rate, which comes from volume aggregated across 150+ clients, and the neutrality: if Akamai isn’t your best fit, we say so.
Does Akamai deliver inside mainland China?
Not directly since 30 June 2026, customers transition to partners Tencent Cloud and Wangsu. Mainland delivery also requires an ICP filing regardless of vendor; we structure China as its own contract line so the economics stay honest.
Akamai or Cloudflare?
Wrong question without your traffic data, which is the point of the assessment. As a rule of thumb: Akamai for maximum distribution, enterprise security depth and media scale; Cloudflare for consolidation, self-serve velocity and value at the mid-market. The full head-to-head is linked above.
