What is genuinely production-ready
Request manipulation, personalization at the edge, A/B logic, auth token validation, image transformation and API composition are proven, boring, valuable workloads running at scale today. If your use case looks like these, the technology risk is essentially gone. Futures-trading is not fraud, it is enthusiasm with a budget request attached, and the buyer’s job is dating the delivery honestly.
What is still roadmap wearing a keynote
Whole applications at the edge, heavy stateful workloads and databases everywhere remain more demo than deployment for most organizations. Nothing wrong with ambition; plenty wrong with paying committed money for it this fiscal year. The proven workloads share a shape: small, stateless, latency-sensitive decisions made per request, which is exactly what the edge is structurally good at.
Portability deserves a line in every edge evaluation, because edge platforms are the least standardized layer in the stack. Logic written against one provider’s runtime, APIs and deployment model migrates with real friction, which quietly deepens lock-in with every function shipped. The countermeasure is architectural: keep business logic in portable cores with thin platform adapters, and count migration cost honestly when comparing platforms. The vendor’s enthusiasm for edge adoption is partly enthusiasm for that friction, which is precisely why your architecture should manufacture less of it than their tutorials suggest.
The pricing shapes
Per-request with compute-time multipliers dominates, and costs are trivially small until suddenly they are not, at high request volumes the arithmetic deserves the same rigor as bandwidth. Model it at your scale before the architecture depends on it. The sudden-cost property comes from multiplication: per-request pricing looks like dust until it meets a request count with commas in it, at which point the dust becomes a line item with a name.
In practice
Pilot with the boring workloads first: an auth check, a header rewrite, an image transform. Measure the latency gain and the invoice at real volume for one quarter. That pilot answers, in your numbers, whether the edge earns a bigger role in your architecture, and it does so for pocket change. Committing to keynote futures before running the pocket-change pilot is how edge budgets end up defending themselves in review meetings.
